Think about Emily St. John Mandel, Suzanne Collins (The Hunger Games), etc. Perhaps the difference is that most sci-fi/fantasy/YA readers are perfectly fine with the idea of the world as we know it coming to an end, by whatever means, because these novels are concentrated on the survivors. But when it comes to Covid, the general population is torn between the deniers (who wants to read about something they refuse to acknowledge?) and those who are still fighting to stay uninfected.
