(It has a LITERAL underground railroad.) As for UNDERGROUND AIRLINES I very much enjoyed the setup (how America wound up with 4 slave states in the 21st century) but I found the ending disappointing. There was a major plot point I couldn't believe at all.
Robert Loprestihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08844889305615182897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-65998588597279106642016-10-05T19:41:17.994-04:002016-10-05T19:41:17.994-04:00Elizabeth, there were TWO Winston Churchills who w...Elizabeth, there were TWO Winston Churchills who were writers. The Nobel-Prize winning wartime P.M. largely wrote non-fiction. Dale, I loved "Bring The Jubilee." Yeah, you think you know what's going to happen--you think! :) And I recommend the Greenberg/Resnick-edited anthologies from 20 years ago; "Alternate Presidents," "Alternate Outlaws," "Alternate Warriors" and (so help me!) "Alternate Kennedys." And, Rob, I'm delighting in "nevermore!" (Including your story!) Oh, and L. Sprague De Camp ROCKS!!Jeff Bakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00316081079528920123noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-19102340698578030332016-10-05T13:27:52.101-04:002016-10-05T13:27:52.101-04:00I've read at least one short story by Winston ...I've read at least one short story by Winston Churchill but I didn't know he won the Nobel Prize for Literature! That's so cool.

Adolf Hitler believed in astrology but didn't care for one feature of his birth chart when cast for the correct time of birth, so he hired astrologers to advise him based on a falsified chart. I haven't read it in years (decades?), but I remember loving it. It involves a future in which the south has won the war. The protagonist travels back in time merely to view as a spectator the battle at Gettysburg. By now everyone should have a good idea where the story goes!
Dale Andrewshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10553503281187956955noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-16861362064102685922016-10-05T10:39:43.788-04:002016-10-05T10:39:43.788-04:00Great post here, Rob--and I'm curious about wh...Great post here, Rob--and I'm curious about what each of you think on your respective "Underground"novels. I've read neither but interested in both (and perhaps even including one of them in a class next year--precisely as examples of what you're talking about here). In fact, I used to make my students in World Civ WRITE an alternative history essay: give me the facts of what happened, now, pick one of these AH scenarios (or come up with one of your own) and tell me what MIGHT have happened, based on what you've learned. I got some really good stuff.

Again, Rob, wow, wow, wow - congratulations, and I can't wait to read "Street of the Dead House".Eve Fisherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03015761600962360110noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-46816896041247115622016-10-05T08:29:27.787-04:002016-10-05T08:29:27.787-04:00A good blog!
