This is where I show you who I am, and am positive that I won’t, either.”

As such it’s pitch-perfect table-setting for their famous final scene, which culminates with:

“If all I've said doesn't mean anything to you, then forget it and we'll make it just this: I won't because all of me wants to, regardless of consequences, and because you counted on that with me the same as you counted on that with all the others.”

He’s warning her, knowing full well that she won’t understand.

BrianBrian Thorntonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14164348967846859987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-43290834732846431932020-05-01T12:59:29.575-04:002020-05-01T12:59:29.575-04:00That's a connection I would have never made, b...That's a connection I would have never made, but I like it. Do you know there is a book about Hammett's fiction called Beams Falling? And here is some more about the famous Parable. https://criminalbrief.com/?p=8162Robert Loprestihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08844889305615182897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-17386598060979678472020-05-01T12:58:40.604-04:002020-05-01T12:58:40.604-04:00Joseph, excellent article. I'm probably a pessimist, but after 25 years of working the streets, I believe that the changes in habits most people make don't last very long.

Not only are people doing cheap ripoffs of Hammett's books, but the so called "National Emergency Library is blatantly digitalizing copyrighted books and making them available without the author's consent, thus depriving authors of income on their own works. The Authors Guild is currently contesting this process:
https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/sign-our-open-letter-to-internet-archive-to-shut-down-the-so-called-national-emergency-library?source=email& R.T. I checked on the ebook status of other Hammett works, and can confirm that there are tons of "bootleg" copies of his other books—The Dain Curse, Red Harvest, The Glass Key, etc.—also for sale online, many at the 99-cent level.Joseph D'Agnesehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06718912272076700465noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-28402719598467611832020-05-01T10:12:35.019-04:002020-05-01T10:12:35.019-04:00I have always loved the Flitcraft Parable, because...I have always loved the Flitcraft Parable, because it's so true: having changed personas a couple of times in my own life, I know it is possible to go in a whole 'nother direction, to become someone else than you ever were before. But it's easier - and more lasting - if you do it young. (Which I did.) Middle-aged people - 96% of mid-life crises are Flitcrafts. Unless they get hooked on drugs, in which case, well... they generally die. On the other hand, they don't have toxic Agent Orange.

I remember that tale from Hammett. While I agree with your conclusion of his Calvinist intent, I like to consider another option. Quantum physics suggests our multiverse splits along different timelines. Somewhere there are universes where Al Gore won the election, and elsewhere Jeb Bush handily defeated an upstart pseudo-billionaire to square off against Hillary Clinton. Hey, scientists can dream!Leigh Lundinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07921276795499571578noreply@blogger.com
