And sometimes the restrictive supervision goes in waves. In 1971, when I joined the old BNDD, we were expected to have short hair and to wear suits and ties on surveillance. Undercover agents were provided with wigs to wear during undercover operations. That slowly changed, but whenever you got word that Inspection was coming around, it was time to clean up again.R.T. I spoke with a former member of the South African Army who was a pain in the arse to his superiors but also indispensable because of his talents. It’s my understanding he actually turned down promotions so he wouldn’t have to ‘professionalize’ (my word, not his).

I know what you mean about being loyal to something that’s been good to– or for– you and, as a bonus, may have sentimental value. When I graduated high school, a classmate gave me a gift of a shaving kit. In June, I attended my alumni dinner and learned he was dying. I visited him at his sick bed and brought the kit along. He couldn’t believe I’d kept it all these decades.

There used to be hatters (milliners for women) who shaped and brushed hats, but I don’t know if any practitioners survived this past half century. Long ago they used to use mercury or lead in the process, which slowly poisoned the hatter… hence the Mad Hatter in Alice. Women might think it has more than a little to do with the male condition.Leigh Lundinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07921276795499571578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-24004504143467616152016-08-12T12:04:59.405-04:002016-08-12T12:04:59.405-04:00Ah me. (I think my favorite line here was probably a toss-off amidst the more serious memories--the one about the fedora as frisbee.) Hang in there!
