Those are words to live by. I have no idea how or why I can work in the prison, but I do know that it helps me deal with violence, within and without. And there is so much all around us, so much that we don't even SEE anymore, because we just take it for granted. I told the guys in prison a while back to compare "Gunsmoke" to the modern "Hawaii Five-0" and see what a dramatic leap in violence there's been. I grew up an only child who was horrified when my two boys "got into it" and occasionally hit each other. Never frighened of violence at home, school, or on the streets, my reaction to it when an adult was to get away from the situation as quickly as possible. Then, in my early sixties, my best friend was murdered during a home invasion. She died of blunt force trauma to the head and during the trial, they didn't introduce the weapon because he did it with his fists.<br />To the day I die, I will think of her and wonder how frightened she must have been, how much pain she endured. I know that's only one man, but I could never deal with violence by working at the prison like Eve. I admire her for this.<br />One son is in law enforcement. The other is a teacher who has gone to work for the library. They both come home and tell stories of violence on their jobs. When I used to complain that I didn't like their being in jobs that invited violence, their reply was always, "We don't especially like you teaching with these shootings in schools."<br />Sadly, I think violence is a part of the down side of humanity and will never be completely controlled.Fran Rizerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08655783035179620991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-51785382090295268522014-07-01T08:17:17.065-04:002014-07-01T08:17:17.065-04:00A good piece and so relevant to us as that subset ...A good piece and so relevant to us as that subset of humanity, mystery writers.
