Jeff, I thought I had received every kind of rejection a writer could get, but your rejection for a guidelines request takes the cake. I'll have to remember that one, for my classes. You burned your first rejection. I burned my wedding dress when I got divorced.
I think, however, that both of us learn from mistakes.

That story may have done very well in another market. Not so sure the wedding dress would have done better in another market, but I'm sure I could have sold it.

Like you, most of my rejections have included hand-written notes of encouragement from editors, but that didn't ease the pain. I had a hard time dealing with them because my magazine features always sold immediately while I sometimes received rejections on short stories, which I didn't and don't write very often (probably because of that sting of rejection!)

Thanks for your insight, Dixon. It does make me feel better this morning. I worked as a magazine editor for a while and always sent personal rejection letters, including to the editor of the Saturday Evening Post after he retired.

Fran Rizerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08655783035179620991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-23928977154275432032014-01-10T08:02:53.194-05:002014-01-10T08:02:53.194-05:00I admire your positive attitude toward rejections....I admire your positive attitude toward rejections.

Learning to live with them is certainly one of the keys to a writing career.Janice Lawnoreply@blogger.com
