Hmmm... Re the movies, most of the tropes drive me crazy: the character who's only creative when he's off his meds, the amateur who's the only one who can help the patient mental health professionals are insensitive to and don't understand—don't get me started!Elizabeth Zelvinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13944424094949207841noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-63984500080828697692021-04-05T21:38:17.740-04:002021-04-05T21:38:17.740-04:00Liz, on rare occasion, I've witnessed people o...Liz, on rare occasion, I've witnessed people on the streets of NYC conversing with themselves. Those might not have stuck in my mind, but one day I encountered a guy I worked with on Wall Street. He was smart, affable, married if I remembered right, pleasant and normally approachable. Perhaps he was reciting prayers, I didn't know. He didn't seem to see me and instead of saying hello, I edged away and didn't mention it later that afternoon. What do you hypothesize was going on?Leigh Lundinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07921276795499571578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-77490461606639950272021-04-05T21:37:32.624-04:002021-04-05T21:37:32.624-04:00Elizabeth, do read the article again. Someone with multiple personalities is NOT a schizophrenic, or at least the personalities are not symptomatic of schizophrenia but of dissociative identity disorder, which is something completely different.Elizabeth Zelvinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13944424094949207841noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-81076866389568812452021-04-05T21:29:54.663-04:002021-04-05T21:29:54.663-04:00Oh, you and Velma have been conspiring against me,...Oh, you and Velma have been conspiring against me, haven't you! We can fix that.

Liz, my eyebrows shot up at that last sentence. How did she do that?! You might have guessed I'd try on some smartass comment: So if 'nuts' isn't a diagnosis, what about 'crackers?'

It's a fascinating article, Liz. I couldn't help but think of movies featuring such afflictions and wondering what you'd think. The one I'm thinking of, may or may not have been on medication. I suspect not because she had three or four personalities I know of. She led a sad life. She spent some time in homeless shelters, acted in a couple of movies, & is now deceased. I assume the hardest task with DEA agents, like NYPD cops I did trainings for not long after 911, would be to get them to admit they were in any emotional distress.Elizabeth Zelvinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13944424094949207841noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-88246022007448528032021-04-05T14:35:57.610-04:002021-04-05T14:35:57.610-04:00Absolutely, Eve. The general population doesn't know how to handle this type of problem.
DEA once sent me to Trauma Team Member training. They truly need professional help, both to get them on medication and keep them on medication.
As for DID - I definitely "believe" in that. I accept it as scientifically proven and have run across a few cases of that in my day, too.
