This blog arose from my discovery of that ending clip which prompted me to ponder who'd be a good person to send it to. May we all have few rejections or ridiculous reviews in 2013! And, don’t sweat the tough-sell when it comes to short stories. I've read all the Callie mysteries I could get my hands on, and I'm sure your wonderful writing will land another short piece soon.

For myself: I recently received a rejection from a very kind editor, after the manuscript had been out for about four months. The editor apologized for holding the story “so long”, but, since I knew that meant the piece had been under true consideration, I wanted to tell her: “Don’t worry about it. I’m glad it took you this long to decide not to buy.” (Of course, I know editors are too busy to enjoy receiving such letters from writers. So, I kept my thanks to myself. But – who knows? – maybe that editor is a SleuthSayers reader, and will see it here. Stranger things have happened. lol)

In the immortal words of Red-Green “Keep your stick on the ice!”
--DixonDixon Hillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11220791609338404147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-32056878357573282362012-12-10T10:36:42.160-05:002012-12-10T10:36:42.160-05:00Fran,
There's nothing worse than a 'review...Fran,
There's nothing worse than a 'review' where the reader hasn't paid any attention to your book. (Steve Hunter tells a story about a critic, in his own paper, who didn't get the name of the villain right.) The other thing that's disconcerting is when you get a positive review, but for blindingly wrong reasons: e.g., they didn't really pay attention, either. I don't believe people who say they don't read their own reviews, but you have to resist the impulse to respond, even when it gets personal (no professional would, only some blogger with an ax to grind).David Edgerley Gateshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05302818835018859164noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-74566332019194509922012-12-10T09:47:50.455-05:002012-12-10T09:47:50.455-05:00Fran, those critics should be ware that SleuthSaye...Fran, those critics should be ware that SleuthSayers know 99 ways to make an annoying person disappear.

I'm not sure why that critics read a third book after being critical of the first two, but at least she helped pay the royalties!

And as you know, I enjoy Callie and Jane.Leigh Lundinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07921276795499571578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-87527666913496181592012-12-10T09:43:36.175-05:002012-12-10T09:43:36.175-05:00Fran, well written. On...Nice piece, Fran. We've all been there.

One of my favorite examples of bad reviews (and by that I mean reviews that are bad, not books that are bad) is one I referred to some time back in a column. The Washington Post journalist who reviewed Laura Lippman's The Most Dangerous Thing groused that after reading the book she had absolutely no idea what the title referred to. Guess who didn't finish the book -- the last sentence explicitly tells the reader what the most dangerous thing is. And everyone who actually read the novel all the way through knew exactly how lazy the reviewer was.Dale Andrewshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10553503281187956955noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-86319474387326611932012-12-10T08:45:02.087-05:002012-12-10T08:45:02.087-05:00Coincidently Fran, my post tomorrow is about unpub...Coincidently Fran, my post tomorrow is about unpublished stories--you may be comforted to know that I have more than one.

As to those "so-called" reviews--they're not, reviews that is. If there's one thing the internet has proven, it is that there are many nasty, mean-spirited and envious people out there waiting to pounce. It wouldn't matter what you wrote. Tolstoy would receive the same treatment were he to enter the arena today.

And for the record, I've read the third of the Callie Parrish series (and intend to read more) and it was delightfully written and wonderfully human in it's tone; well worth reading. That's my review.

P.S. Don't respond to them. It grants them a weight and seriousness they do not deserve.David Deanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13005457506363262838noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-39674303830353049082012-12-10T08:11:37.091-05:002012-12-10T08:11:37.091-05:00A wonderful rejection of the rejection/ bad review...A wonderful rejection of the rejection/ bad review letter but not worth the energy.
