In the 70's, Darryl took a H.S. film class and they studied "GWTW." Their teacher told them to think of it as being kin to a nighttime soap opera. And I think Rhett's final line to Scarlett shocks us, not because of the use of the word "damn" (actually the movie's second) but because it signals that he has ceased to care---and for all her flaws, we do give a darn about Ms. Scarlett. What a wonderful memory! I'm very impressed by your mom.

My mother wanted to see GwtW too. I don't recall if my dad came along, but she dragged us to the local drive-in, surely thinking she could better manage 3 rambunctious boys at the ultimate chick-flick. I'm not sure that worked out too well.

A railroad track ran along the back edge of the drive-in lot and the train always come through at the critical moment, always.

Frankly, my dear… Chooooo-chooooo, Chooooo-chooooo.Leigh Lundinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07921276795499571578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-63497031919966529072014-12-22T15:41:55.167-05:002014-12-22T15:41:55.167-05:00I've read that it's too racist to be publi...I've read that it's too racist to be published now. But it shows how things were back then. And it shows how a strong independent woman reacts when her world falls apart. And I think Scarlett was beginning to realize how selfish she had been.
Fran, my mom, like so many moms do, give up and sacrifice for their children. Mother really wanted me to have that experience even if she couldn't take me, herself. And my memory is I was barely 14. But not exactly sure. It was really rather a feminist movie, wasn't it? A strong woman, who survives, without the Disney ending. Would GWTW be published today? Would the movie be made today with that ending? (I read the book many times as a child/teenager, and I saw the movie at least twice.)Eve Fisherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03015761600962360110noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-16172864442975243882014-12-22T07:22:06.600-05:002014-12-22T07:22:06.600-05:00Jan, for your mom to put you on the bus to see thi...Jan, for your mom to put you on the bus to see this movie shows how much she loved both you and the movie!
Fran Rizerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08655783035179620991noreply@blogger.com
