I'm not a salesman for Scrivener, but after years of trying all kinds of different programs, it's the one that's worked best for me. In some ways, our process is a lot alike, and in other ways, it's almost polar opposites.

I take a long time harvesting and collecting ideas, too, and I consider my outline--actually a list of scenes in order, somewhat like a screenplay--as my first draft. And like you, it's more a test of whether the story actually works from A to Z.

I know nothing about Scrivener and didn't know it made a separate file for each chapter. I keep each scene as a separate file so I can move them around as necessary, though, until I find the right order. Then I assemble them as one document for the first time, probably around the fourth revision so I can also send it out to that first trusted reader.

I lost a terrific beta reader about three years ago and haven't found anyone nearly as good yet. I tried a new one on my current WIP, and she told me she'd be tough. She took much too long to get back and say she loved everything, which was no help at all. Two days ago, I ran into her husband who told me she had a couple of problems (both of which I'd worried about anyway) but didn't want to say so and hurt my feelings. (Sigh)

I don't have a set number of drafts, but over the years it has become five or six, like you.Steve Liskowhttp://www.steveliskow.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-49604503845002546282019-06-08T08:48:27.450-04:002019-06-08T08:48:27.450-04:00Always interesting to see how other writers do it....Always interesting to see how other writers do it.O'Neil De Nouxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03142721824657611738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119105822589181967.post-87466225062778892102019-06-08T07:42:17.296-04:002019-06-08T07:42:17.296-04:00I so much appreciate this post, Stephen.
